Senate Bill 693 became effective September 1, 2025, with key requirements taking effect January 1, 2026. This guide covers everything Texas notaries need to know about SB693 compliance and the notary bond requirement.
SB693 key changes
- Mandatory 2-hour education course from the Texas Secretary of State ($20 per attempt)
- New criminal offense for notarizing without personal appearance
- Notary journal now legally required — 10-year record retention
- Expanded Remote Online Notarization (RON) framework
Texas notary bond — unchanged at $50
SB693 did not change the notary bond requirement. The bond is still $10,000 for 4 years and costs $50 flat from a TDI-licensed surety agency like Quantum Surety. No credit check required.
